I am interested in increasing my knowledge of some of the greats from the early part of the 20th century. I want to try to get some CDs that are available which highlight some of the early jazz greats like Shadow Wilson, Baby Dodds, Sid Catlett, etc. Anyone have any particular recommendations? Anything that stands out or is a must have. Thanks.

My drum instructor had a cd box set that was called "the boiler room" or something like that, which was kind of a historical compilation of jazz drumming. I'll try to see if I can find out what it is exactly. I remember it being good, though.

The "origin" of jazz drumming is the same as the origin of jazz - New Orleans. The first jazz drummers were the New Orleans second line drummers who were primarily marching drummers who invented the drum set and jazz drumming from second line drumming around 1890's.
